Learning Language and Loving It – The Hanen Program ® for Early Childhood Educators/Teachers

A warm welcome to all the schools taking part in the randomised control trial, testing the effectiveness of Learning Language and Loving It – The Hanen Program® for Early Childhood Educators in enhancing children’s communication and language skills.

The training was originally scheduled to take place between November 2019 and June 2020. Due to the Coronavirus pandemic causing schools to close, the training schedule will now resume in November 2020 and continue until May 2021.

Workshops are delivered by Hanen trained Programme Leaders who are either Speech and Language Therapists or Early Years Consultants.

Each workshop will be 2.5 hours long and will focus on theory and practical strategies to use in the setting. Workshops will look at both interaction and information strategies and we promise they will be interactive and the ‘in-person’ workshops will have refreshments! The workshop schedule looks like this…

  • Nov 2020 – Online revision workshop – Hanen Teacher Talk A: Encouraging Language Development in Early Childhood settings
  • Jan 2021 – Revision workshops – Hanen Teacher Talk B: Let Language Lead the Way to Literacy
  • Feb 2021 – Workshop 6: Language Leads to Literacy will be repeated
  • Mar 2021 – Workshop 7: Peer Interaction
  • Mar / April 2021 – Workshop 8: Wrap-up

Schools taking part in the training should share information with the parents of the children accessing the nursery. Click here to access a letter to parents  which explains more about the training and allows parents the opportunity to withdraw their child from being visible in the videos.

Schools staff who are taking part in the training will receive a letter giving more information about the training and the information we will record and share with the evaluators about their attendance. Click here to view the Hanen participant information letter.

Schools in the intervention group will be provided with a contribution (50%) of the cover costs associated with training attendance.

School bursars will be asked to provide the hourly rate for covering school staff whilst they attend the training workshops and take part in the video review visits.

Cover costs will be automatically calculated based on attendance.

Payments will be made to schools in Jan 2021, April 2021 and July 2021 and statements will be provided to show how this amount has been calculated.

For more information about cover costs, please contact Lisa Chetter, Project Manager:

The evaluation is a randomised control trial and as such schools have been randomly allocated, 50% to an intervention / treatment group and 50% to a control group.

In the intervention group, school staff will attend the Hanen Learning Language and Loving It workshops.

Staff in the schools allocated to the control group will carry on with their normal teaching practice. If your school is in the control group you will still need to take part in the following evaluation activities:

  • Sign and return the MOU addendum by 16th October
  • Send out a letter to the parents of all pre-school children about the evaluation activity in October 2020
  • Share the unique pupil numbers with NatCen (November 2020)
  • Your teaching staff may be asked to participate in a short telephone survey (spring term 2021)
  • Your teaching staff may be asked to participate in a short survey (summer term 2021)
  • Vocabulary assessments with children (June – July 2021)

As a thank you for your help and flexibility, all control schools taking part will receive:

  • An additional £250 payment in January 2021
  • And the £1,000 promised at the end of the trial, now to be paid in July 2021

Please get in touch with Lisa Chetter, Project manager, if you have any questions or concerns. We are happy to help.

In order to protect training attendees, programme leaders, children and society as a whole we will ensure that our training is as safe as possible.

The Teacher Talk A workshops taking place in November 2020 will be delivered online using Zoom.

We are able to complete all subsequent workshops online and will offer in-person groups workshops only if venues can allow participants to follow national and local public health guidance around Coronavirus safety.

We are also able to complete all individual video review sessions online rather than in-person if necessary.
